I'M NOT A STEREOTYPE.

I'M *THAT* JEW.

ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW: To design a booklet based off the transcript from a TedTalk on any topic of our choosing.

The talk I decided to go with is based off of Eitan Chitayat's Ted talk entitled "I'm not a stereotype, I'm that Jew," where he discusses his identity as a Jewish man. He also talks about the Anti-Semitism he's faced because of his ethnoreligious background, the historical hardships Jews have faced in countries they've lived in after the Jewish diaspora, anti-Semitic tropes / stereotypes made towards Jews to justify religious hatred [e.g. Christianity, Islam, etc.], the alarming rates of more than half of all religious hate crimes made towards Jews, the small micro-aggressions being made consciously or unconsciously, etc. As a Jewish person myself, this project in particular hit quite close to home for me. For those of you who may or may not know this about Jewish people, Jews come in all shapes and sizes, eye & hair colour, we have other ethnic backgrounds aside from being "Jewish", we don't all have the same nationality, AND, we aren't White. So, I decided I was going to make a statement. A really big statement. I was going to be using visually striking colours, bold and condensed typefaces to capture the attention of viewers as well as to emulate the Jewish struggle. Instead of making a typical 8.5" X 11" book and because I was making a statement, I wanted to put each individual design on a 11" X 17" tabloid sheet of paper and bind it all myself.

I'm really proud of how this booklet turned out. The beginning part of this project was pretty challenging for me as I initially didn't have any ideas and because of my lack of initial planning, I didn't really know how I wanted my final piece to be laid out. However, it all came together quite nicely and I really like how bold and visually striking it is. Below, you will see the final product as well as my process book which showcases my ability to do extensive research on the topic at hand, documenting my initial ideas, rough & refined sketches as well as the final.
